How should I choose a Qigong method and teacher / Master?

Different Qigong methods can support different purposes. Therefore it is important to consider what the purpose of your training is. Would you practise to recover and feel well; to handle stress; to counteract infirmities of old age; to develop your wisdom and your abilities; to become a better therapist?

The most important criteria for selecting a Qigong method should be the results that could be achieved by training. The training results could differ even when the same method is taught by different Qigong teachers. With an experienced teacher or with a teacher who belongs to an experienced teaching group there will be better results and a better support.

In China it is often said that one should choose a teacher with high Gung Fu, also called Gung Li. Gung Fu is a person's skill and effort to practise Qigong.

To check persons Gung Fu we can check his or her body, mind and Qi. The body should be relaxed, harmonious and soft like that of a baby. The person's behaviour and way of thinking can show us the quality of the mind. A person that is often depressed, talks gossip behind other's backs etc. has too low Gung Fu. The person's Qi should be strong and of good quality. In his or her Qifield participants should be able to recover or get better fast. Improvements from some difficult cases should be documented.

It is preferable if the teacher has published research papers on Qigong. If the papers have been awarded, the quality of the papers is probably good. Objective research tests can partly show a persons Gung Fu and they are more reliable than other tests. This will protect students from getting cheated or even hurt by teachers with less experience and of less ability.
